Senior Office Administrator

Main Purpose of Job: Organisation and management of general affairs and Office Administration for Powerlase Photonics Ltd.

  • Provide support for Company Executives
  • Company Schedule and organisation of business meetings, minutes and venues
  • Develop and evaluate administrative procedures and office processes
  • Company asset and property management including building facilities, repairs etc.
  • Manage office Administration; reception, communications both written and electronic, filing systems and filing, ordering of office requisites
  • Coordination of Accounting, Purchasing System, Budgets and control, authorisations for expenditure
  • Manage HR process (Job posting, Recruitment and Training) and the formulation of HR policies/protocols
  • Manage annual leave and sickness entitlements
  • Establish Company House Style, formats and procedures through liaison with Powerlase staff
  • Process documentation internal and external to the company as requested

Technical Author

Main Purpose of Job: Develop and maintain user and operation manuals of laser systems

  • Have experience interviewing Engineers and writing operations and user manuals for Powerlase laser products
  • Understand laser, optical, mechanical, electrical and control systems
  • Have experience as a Technical Writer at other laser manufacturers and laser system integrators
  • Will need clean room experience watching the assembly and testing of lasers and testing control systems
  • Know how to take digital photographs and add callouts using Illustrator, Photoshop or Frame Maker
  • Review and develop the contents of web sites
  • Other duties as assigned

Key Skills:

  • Knowledge of system software tools, i.e: Frame Maker, Canvas, Microsoft Word
  • Have writing samples and have experience describing laser systems and/or laser material processing equipment
  • Ability to develop technical documentation for training, software/hardware use and user procedures

Ideally, a degree (BSc or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical or Optical Engineering plus Technical Writing experience.

Commercial Administrator

Main Purpose of Job: 

  • Quotation Control and Maintenance: Act as a central control point.  Create and maintain a quotation log for sales of laser systems, laser spares, service calls etc. Ensure quotations include correct mark up elements, and that they address peripheral costs, such as shipping, travel, subsistence, duties. Set up a system to ensure that the sales person or customer is aware that a quotation’s validity is close to expiring. Key Reports – Sales and Service Directors.
  • Commercial Investigation: Ensure that PPL are able to export to potential customers and that all necessary agreements and licenses are, or will be, put in place ahead of shipping. Determine and maintain, shipping, billing and administrative addresses for customers/potential customers. Check incoming POs against preceding PPL quotations, identify differences and resolve with the Programme Manager prior to business induction. Key Reports – Sales Director and Product Manager.
  • Import Controls: Maintain a record of components and sub systems imported into the EU. Tag those that are permanent imports and those that are likely to be exported.  Ensure Inward Processing Relief controls and renewals/extensions are maintained. Ensure IPR references are quoted on exports. Key Reports – Purchasing Specialist.
  • Export Controls: Identify export criteria that PPL need to have completed, or to comply with. Identify FTA issues, maintain and update FTA approvals.  Match Inward Processing Relief items with goods in which they are re-exported. Gain export licenses for products where and when required. Raise Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, and any other mandated shipping paperwork. Liaise with shippers. Key Reports – Finance, Product Manager.
  • Shipping Suppliers: Liaison and Control: Monitor progress of shipped items, liaise with shipper and customer. Monitor supplier performance & Book shipping. Key Reports – Product Manager, Engineering Services Manager.
  • Customer Liaison: Liaise with customer regarding Incoterms, shipping dates, collection etc.
  • PPL Finance Liaison: Liaise with PPL Finance to ensure no goods are shipped without appropriate payment, or cover. Advise finance when Commercial Orders are shipped. Key Reports – Finance Manager.
  •  Customs Liaison: As required. Key Reports – Purchasing Specialist.
  • Packing: In the case of hand carriable packages, assist with packing and labelling, as required. Key Reports- Line/Engineering Services Manager, Functions – As above.

Key Skills:

  • This role requires a well organised person, who is capable of communicating at all levels of the company, as well as externally, with a wide range of customers, suppliers and third party organisations.
  • As well as excellent communication skills the jobholder will need; good Microsoft Excel & Word, E-mail and telephone skills. Powerlase Photonics Limited deals with a wide range of companies and organisations where English is second language.

Manufacturing Operations Manager

Main Purpose of  Job: Responsible for development and implementation of manufacturing systems for high power laser systems and managing facilities (System components are not generally fabricated in-house, just assembly and test.) 

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of all aspects of manufacturing systems for high technology, high value product range. 
  • Responsible for safety aspects of manufacturing and staff.
  • As a member of the management team provide management reports of progress and times scales, and contribute to business planning and operations decision-making. 
  • Product workflow, planning, and facility management.
  • Integrate with and assist with supply chain management and the implementation of an MRP system. 
  • Liase with other companies working in collaboration to support product commercialisation. 
  • Establish and document quality procedures for continuous process improvement, monitoring and narrowing performance limits.  Develop monitoring and reporting methods. 
  • Agree testing methods and ensure common methods are maintained across site 
  • Manage technical construction files and documentation to support each product, including service manuals. 
  • Contribute to the engineering design and manufacturability of products to achieve improvements in performance, quality and cost.
  • Manage the logistics of field support for parts and distribution
  • Accept process owner responsibility where requested
  • Understand the technical aspects of the products sufficient to manage manufacturing
  • Provide weekly and monthly reports of manufacturing activities

Key Skills:

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to motivate and train others, and to provide leadership and direction to staff involved in operations. 
  • Experienced manager, able to make balanced decisions based on rational judgement. 
  • The ability to comprehend technological aspects of the products to optimise manufacturing solutions.
  • Knowledge of business operations and supply chain methods

An advanced degree in a management or technical discipline but previous experience in this function will take priority. Training in manufacturing and quality improvement methods is an advantage.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Main Purpose of Job: Design and development of mechanical aspects of high power lasers and optical light path components.

  •  Lead the mechanical engineering aspects including design and assembly of high power   DPSSL (DiodePumpedSolidStatelaser).
  •  Fundamental design and development in some cases from first principles, including modelling of cooling, heat exchange, stress and materials coatings.
  •  Take responsibility for mechanical design aspects of key projects and manage the development program and time scales through to the finished product. 
  •  Provide management reports of development progress and times scales.
  •  Work in collaboration with optical and electrical design staff providing guidance and direction for needs of assigned projects. 
  •  Liase with other companies working in collaboration to support the product development or commercialisation. 
  •  Identify and collaborate with vendors providing materials and services. 
  • Lead the production of documentation to support product description and manufacture.
  •  Maintain a current awareness of the market and state of the art in high power lasers. 
  •  Direct engineers and technicians applied to the development work.
  •  Conduct performance and development reviews of assigned staff.

Key Skills:

  • Experience in mechanical design of optical or laser systems, including design, modelling, construction and testing.
  • At least 3 years experience in leading mechanical design projects, including budget responsibility.
  • Ability to lead others and motivate staff.

Qualified to degree (BSc) or PhD in Mechanics, a relevant engineering course, or equivalent experience gained in the field.

Laser Engineer

Main purpose of job: Design, develop, construct and test high power diode pumped solid-state lasers.

Key skills: Degree in physics or other relevant field is essential. A post graduate degree would be highly desirable.

A minimum of 3 years industrial experience is desired.

The successful candidate will have experience in some or all of the following: DPSS laser design, 808nm/880nm/940nm pump diodes, pump head design, laser cooling system, thermo-optical modelling and characterization, optical design software (e.g. Zemax, TracePro), resonator modelling using GLAD or similar tool, non-linear optical design and characterization (SHG, THG, FHG), optical parametric oscillators, MOPA laser architecture, fibre optic delivery, reliability testing.

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned laser engineer who has direct experience of high power (>100 W) diode pumped solid state lasers and has worked in a laser design program which has successfully transitioned into production in significant volume.

Other Preferences:

  • Able to develop models and conduct verification and validation effort, analyze and present results to a wide range of technical people, meetings, presentations, etc.
  • Must have a methodical approach and strong attention to detail.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable to a changing environment.
  • Able to handle high work volumes in a multi task mode.
  • Team working is essential
  • Ability to estimate workload and timescales, and report accurately on progress.

Optomechanical Design Engineer

Main purpose of job: Thermo-mechanical analysis, design and development of diode pumped solid state laser systems.

Key Skills: Degree in mechanical engineering or other relevant field is essential. A post graduate degree would be highly desirable.

A minimum of 3 years industrial experience is desired.

The successful candidate will have 3+ years experience of using a recent version of SolidWorks and will have experience of some or all of the following: thermal modelling and analysis using SolidWorks/FEA, ANSYS or similar, optomechanical design and analysis, Autocad, cooling system design (water, liquid nitrogen), vacuum compatibility, structural analysis, tolerance analysis, parts definition systems, creation and maintenance of BOMs, engineering change control, configuration management.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years experience in developing high power diode laser pump modules including temperature control of gain media, stress analysis, verification and validation of modelling and product support from concept through to production.
